Mt. Stephen Avalanche ShedField, BC, Canada
Powerful forces of nature have always been a threat to rail traffic on this portion of the CPR main line in the rugged Rocky Mountains near the Alberta-BC border. Snow and debris flows originating high up the mountainside often resulted in destruction of track and interruption to rail traffic. At a length of 476 feet (145 metre), the Mount Stephen Avalanche Shed was designed to protect the rail line in this particularly vulnerable region. Extensive channelization works were constructed on the slopes above the prevent overflow at the portals and to minimize the length of shed required. CWMM design this structure location in Yoho National Park, meeting the critical environmental constraints while minimizing disruption to the railway. |
